Water is the basis of life, for not only humans but for all living beings on the earth. On the Earth’s surface, water is important in both chemical and physical weathering processes. Most of the water needs to be treated before use, as it is polluted by various man-made activities. Water conservation is more important than food for us. Water is the most precious element on Earth and it needs to be saved at all cost. As we know it, without water there would be no life on earth. We should save water and stop misusing it. Hence, the impact of World Water Day is much more significant for all of us and we must always try to contribute a little in our own ways to celebrate the world water day in the real sense. A core focus of World Water Day is to support the Achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6 : Water and Sanitation for all by 2030. World Water Day’s main objective is to influence everyone in the world to know the importance of water.
In 2022, World Water Day is celebrated under the theme Groundwater : Making the invisible visible and UNESCO is the lead UN agency. UNESCO also contributes to the observance of World Water Day within the activities of its Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP), which works all year long to build the scientific knowledge base to help countries manage their water resources in a sustainable way.
Groundwater : Making the invisible visible – Groundwater is invisible but it’s impact is visible everywhere. Groundwater is a hidden treasure that enriches our lives. Approximately 99% of all liquid freshwater on Earth is Groundwater and it has the potential to provide societies with tremendous social, economic and environmental benefits and opportunities. Groundwater is central to fight against poverty, to food and water security, to socio-economic development and to the resilience of societies and economies to climate change. Reliance on groundwater will only increase, mainly due to growing Water demand by all sectors combined with increasing variation in rainfall patterns. This natural resources is often undervalued, mismanaged and even abused. That is why World Water Day is giving much more priority to save groundwater because it is the resources which is worthy of solving the water problems around each and every corner of the world. The UN World Water Development report 2022, “Groundwater : Making the invisible visible” is launched on 21 March 2022 at the opening ceremony of the 9th World Water Forum in Dakar Senegal.
