Digital Desk, May 23: Heavy rains in and around Dima Hasao caused mudslides. Haflong railway station had been inundated due to the mudslides caused by the continuous rain. As per the report of Assam State Disaster Management Authority, seven people have lost their lives so far in floods and landslides.
On the other hand, AJP Chief Lurinjyoti Gogoi stated about the reason for the massive landslides at Haflong in Dima Hasao district. He said that it is not entirely because of the continuous rain, however, it is due to the two Hydroelectronic Power Plants located in the area.
”If two hydroelectronic power projects of 200 megawat and 50 megawat can cause this kind of devastation then you can estimate what the 2000 megawat Lower Subansiri Hydroelectronic Power Project can do for Assam in the coming time. The people of Assam should themselves understand what the result will be from such a project given the amount of rainfall and floods in the region. The height of Lower Subansiri dsam is 116 metres and the length is 284 metre and it can hold 1.73 cubic kilometres of water. Everyone need to be aware of it. We need to understand that lives and security of the society can’t be put at risk in the name of development,” Lurinjyoti Gogoi stated in a Press Meet held in Guwahati on May 21.
