An Eviction drive carried out by the state government in June last year on Hasila Beel . The Gauhati high court has directed the government to provide the basic necessities to the families who were affected during the eviction drive and are currently residing in those areas.
The bench of justice Devashish Baruah said while hearing the petition “ It is the opinion of this court that the right to life includes the right to live with dignity, right to portable water, as well as right to basic medical facilities.” be ensure to the affected families.
60 petitioners have jointly written petitions over the eviction drive carried out by the government in the Hasila Beel of Goalpara as part of wet land was against the law that was laid down by the Supreme Court in various judgments.
Around 566 families including children were allegedly affected by the drive and are now living in a destitution state of man made humanitarian crisis leading to death and suffering among the people residing in makeshift camps with no proper food, water, sanitation and medical care.
The court also directed the governing authorities of Goalpara to produce a record and affidavits of their stands and list of arrangements provided to the victims basic necessities of life forming parts of right to life.
