Dr Rickey AJ Syngkon aged 54, a sitting Lok Shaba MP of Shillong died on Thursday evening after collapsing during a football match with friends in Mawlai Mawiong due to cardiac arrest.
The incident happened when a friendly football match was played where Syngkon was also taking part in the game, where he suddenly collapsed in the field. Immediately he was rushed to Mawiong Community Health Centre.
However, due to the absence of a doctor at the facility, he was referred to Dr H Gordon Roberts Hospital in Jaiaw. Despite all the efforts to save him, he could not be revived.
Tributes from various leaders across the States have flooded the social media after the news broke out about the sudden dismiss of the MP.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma posted his condolences message on his X “Deeply shocked and profoundly saddened by the untimely demise of MP from Shillong, Dr Ricky A J Syngkon. Dr Ricky was a dedicated and compassionate leader, with deep enthusiasm for public service and unwavering commitment to his people.” And further stated that, Syngkon was “rooted in faith and served with humility, vision, and a sincere desire to uplift society.”
Meanwhile, Meghalaya Health Department called him “a gem—known for his humility, kind heart, warm smile, and unwavering love for the people,” expressing anguish over the loss.
Himanta Biswa Sarma CM of Assam also wrote a tribute in his X post “noting deep sadness over the death of the Voice of the People Party leader and praying for his soul’s eternal peace”.
The ongoing Meghalaya budget assembly session was also put on hold by the state with the demise of the Lok Sabha MP.
