Digital Desk, May 12: Peaceful protests in Sri Lanka turned violent on Monday since mobs supporting Mahindra Rajapaksa destroyed two protest sites. Sri Lankans criticised a speech by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa as it failed to address the real issuses of economic crisis. Notably, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa stepped down as Prime Minister on May 9 amid worst economic crisis. He tweeted, ”Effective immediately I have tendered my resignation as Prime Minister to the President.”
”You should have advised your ministers and your own brother Mahinda against influencing their goons to initiate a wave of terror. If not for their stupidity, Sri Lanka would not have experienced a wave of violence,” one of the tweets concluded. Violence was reported near Colombo as well as a resort owned by Mahinda’s sons. Sri Lankans are angry on account of shortages of fundamental items such as food, fuel and medical supplies.
