October 8 is a day dedicated to honour the brave and vigilant soldiers of Indian Air Force. This day marks the establishment of Indian Air Force in 1932. As of now, IAF is the 4th largest air force in the world, with more than 1700 aircraft and about 140,000 personnel. IAF holds the record of operating the highest airstrip in the world in Ladakh, named Daulat Oldi airstrip. Apart from conducting aerial operations, IAF also helps in rescuing operations during disasters. In 2013, during the Uttarakhand floods, the IAF launched one of the largest humanitarian mission, named operation Rahat.
The theme for this year is “Bharatiya Vayu Sena: Saksham, Sashakt, Atmanirbhar” (Potent, Powerful and Self Reliant).
The day is being celebrated in Marina Beach, Chennai. Defence minister Rajnath Singh and Tamil Nadu Chief minister MK Stalin graced the air show held in Chennai on Sunday.
On the occasion of 92nd anniversary, IAF chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh commented; “Let us continue to strive towards more capable and fully self reliant Air Force.” We as citizens of India also hope that IAF continues to touch the sky with glory.
