A high-level closed doors meeting was chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah was held in New Delhi yesterday on the Manipur crisis. The meeting lasted more than two hours where the meeting was joined by Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel, Security Advisor Kuldeep Singh and DGP Rajiv Singh.

Though no official statement has been released regarding the meeting held in New Delhi on January 2, 2026, through some reliable source revealed that, the meeting likely focuses that the Centre is considering in extending PR and measures to be taken to rehabilitate IDPs and also a discussion on the prevailing situation in Manipur.

The meeting outcome is yet to be put into public domain in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, there has been mixed reaction regarding the imposition of PR in Manipur.

The Centre had imposed the President’s Rule in Manipur on February 13 last year after Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned on February 9, leading to the state into war like situation against the two major ethnics clash the Meitei and the Kuki putting the State Assembly under suspended animation.

The imposition of PR was seen as a temporary measure to stabilize the State. However, a free movement across the State remains still in questions, to both the weary community who are still cut off from the National highways.

On December 14, the BJP high command convened a meeting in New Delhi with party MLAs from all communities, chaired by BJP National general secretary (Organization) BL Santosh and North East coordinator Sambit Patra. Though the meeting did not specifically address the formation of a popular Government, the BJP high command signaled its willingness to take steps toward that direction once free and safe movement is fully restored throughout the State.
