The much-awaited Guwahati university PG students’ union election 2025-2026has concluded with a split verdict, both ABVP & AASU have shared key post in the fought contest. Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) achieved a significant victory in the Guwahati University post graduate student union election, securing top positions including the president and the General Secretary position. While AASU captures the vice president, cultural, literary and academic secretary post. The election results were declared on Tuesday afternoon. Gunjan Deka the newly elected president and Prabal Jyoti Samra the newly elected General secretary. Both the candidates were backed by ABVP.
With an impressive 59% votes, thousand of PG student turned up at polling station across department on Monday to elect their new student representative. President Gunjan Deka backed by ABVP secures 1978 votes, Vice-President Siddhartha Sankar Hazarika backed by AASU secured 1991 votes, General Secretary Prabal Jyoti Samra backed by ABVP secured 1932 votes and Assistant General Secretary backed by AASU secures 1682 votes. This reflects a divided yet a dynamic campus mood. The campaign saw intense debate on campus issues from hostel safety and digital infrastructure to identify and language politics. While AASU focused on cultural preservation and regional issues, ABVP pushed its ‘Digital GU’ and modern development agenda.
The counting day was not without tension. A rough broke out between supporters. However, the authorities confirmed that the situation remained under control and counting ends peacefully. Analysis say the 2025 GU election highlights the growth of influence of national students’ organization while showing that Assamese regional identity politics remains deeply on campus. So, the flag of ABVP, AASU & ACP flutter side by side on the Guwahati University campus, the message from student is clear the future of Assam politics will once again ne written not just in the Assembly, but right here in its classrooms and hostels.
