Assam Mourns A Iconic Singer: Humming King Heart-Throb Assam Zubeen Garg

The Northeast lost its most beloved voice as Zubeen Garg acclaimed Assamese singer, composer and actor, passed away in Singapore to perform in the North East festival. According to reports, he experienced breathing distress during a swim and was rushed to Singapore General Hospital, where he was declared dead on 19th September, 2025. His body was brought back to Guwahati, where a second post-mortem was conducted at Guwahati medical college before being laid to rest will full state Honours.

The Assam government declared a three-day day state mourning and Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a judicial inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has also been formed to probe possible negligence by organisers and associates. Thousands thronged the streets of Guwahati on to bid their final farewell. Emotional scenes unfolded as Zubeen Garg’s coffin draped in the Assamese Gamosa and tricolour was taken to Sonapur for Crematorium for his last rites. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, chief minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Zubeen Garg’s wife Garima Saikia Garg, several Bollywood artist along with Assamese artist and his millions of fan across all over Assam and India paid rich tributes to the Humming king of assam Zubeen Garg by singing one of the most favorite and famous song of the legend ‘Mayabini’ by recalling his unique ability to unite the Northeast through music. He recorded beyond 38 thousand song in more that 40 language. Born on 18th November, 1972 at Tura, Meghalaya into an Assamese Brahmin family. He’s career spanned over three decades with hits in Assamese, Hindi, English, Bengali and other regional language. He was not only a singer but also a representative the flim maker, actor and cultural activist, representing the spirit and pride of Assam
