The winter session Assam Legislative Assembly today witnessed a series of major developments from new legislation to renewed political show-down. With key bills tabled and sharp exchanges inside the house the session remained tense and eventful.

Today is the second day of the winter session Assam Legislative Assembly. Eight amendments and two new bills will be introduced in the house on the second day. The biggest development of the day came as the government tabled the Assam Prohibiting Polygamy Bill, 2025. The bill proposed a complete band on polygamy in the state. Violators could face up to seven years of rigorous imprisonment, along with substantial fines. The Government clarified that the provisions of the bill will not apply to scheduled tribes or area under the Sixth Scheduled of the Constitution. Inside the Assembly, the opposition MLA’s questioned the timing of the bill and demanded a wider consultation process before enforcement. The Bill is now expected to go through detailed discussion in the coming days, making it one of the most watched legislations of this session.

In another major moment, the House saw the re-tabling of the long-pending Tribhuvan Prasad Tiwari Commission Report on the 1983 violence. On the other hand, an unofficial report was also presented, which instantly triggered massive objections from opposition members. Opposition MLAs said that introducing a non-official committee report violates the rules of Assembly norms procedure. The issue revived emotional debates, with several leaders highlighting the historical wounds and demanding justice-based discussions. The tabling of the report marked one of the most politically sensitive developments. Tensions flattered further when the Speaker’s office announced the suspension of two opposition MLAs for the remaining day of the Winter Session. According to the Chair, the MLAs had displayed misconduct and disrespectful behavior toward the Deputy Speaker during assembly proceedings. Opposition parties strongly criticized the suspension, calling it an attempt to silence disagreement. They staged protests inside the Assembly, demanding immediate revocation of the order.
