Assam is all set to commemorate the 400th birth anniversary of Bir Lachit Borphukan on Thursday, 24 November. Poster, banners and LED hoardings have been also put across New Delhi ahead of the celebration which will take place on 23rd and 24th November at Vigyan Bhawan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are likely to participate in the celebration.
Assam Government has also taken several initiatives to celebrate ‘Bir’ General’s birth anniversary, who had led the Ahom soldiers against the Mughals. The Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote a letter to his counterparts in other states requesting them to include a chapter about ‘Bir’ Borphukan and his valour in their school and college curriculum. Government has planned to build a War Memorial, which will also feature a 100-foot-tall Hengdang, an Ahom sword at Alaboi in Kamrup to commemorate the martyr soldiers.
